We are premiering JooWan Kim's Water to Wood for wind quintet and piano.
Water to Wood describes the energetic transformation of winter to spring, pain to pleasure, failure to success, sadness to joy, and many other such alchemical changes that occur in our lives.
In Taoist cosmology, there are 5 elements that form the physiological world. Water stands for winter (among a myriad of other things) and wood stands for spring.
The performers whisper magical syllables at the end of the piece triggering the transformation.
Just like winter inevitably turns to spring, may all our sufferings end.
